El Guiso is an art installation that captures seminal moments of corruption in the Venezuelan epicenter of power since 1989. In Venezuela, guiso means a treacherous business dealing of fraud and corruption. However; it literally means “stew”. Each of the fifteen cooking pots contain a specific guiso that marks the nature of Venezuelan politics as a spoiling stew of corruption and betrayal. It begins with the “Cacerolazos” (pots and pans noise) protests in 1989 during the “Caracazo”, an explosive moment of civil unrest that forced then president, Carlos Andres Perez, out of power, and a protest to corruption that the people never endingly continue through today. El Guiso is accompanied with a cookbook, as a way to describe each of the Guisos inspired by the red book Mi Cocina (1982), by Armando Scannone, known for being the manual for use and style of Venezuelan culinary memory. Popularly referred to as the "Bible of Caracas cuisine."
